On January 20,2017,the eu allows the use of nano forms of methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethyl butylphenol (MBBT) in cosmetics,the European commission issued a G/TBT/N/EU/446 notification, in which amendments to annex VI of EC 1223/2009 were made, and methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethyl butylphenol (MBBT) in nano form with a concentration of less than 10% in skin cosmetics was safe.This draft aims to authorize the use of nano-form MBBT as uv sunscreen in cosmetics.
Methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethyl butyl phenol, which has a characteristic odor, belongs to a light-resistant UVA filter and also has a strong UVB (the absorbability can be up to 305nm to 360nm).
SCCS/1460/11 pointed out that methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethyl butylphenol, due to its poor biodegradability and extremely high octanol-water distribution coefficient, could not exclude the long-term impact or bioaccumulation of MBBT in the environment. Therefore, MBBT is currently classified as R53/Chronic4 (" possible long-term impact on the aquatic environment ").Use of MBBT as an ingredient in sunscreen products may result in environmental exposure.
SCCS/1546/15 indicated that the in vitro genotoxicity assessment of MBBT was negative in two different test systems.These tests were appropriately applied and demonstrated that there was no evidence of chromosomal damage or mutagenicity when mammalian cells were exposed to non-micronization and nano-form MBBT.Although these test data were accepted by the SCCS, no experimental data on cellular particle uptake/internalization were provided.
Given the physicochemical properties of the material (high lipophilic), attention should be paid to the potential bioaccumulation in selected tissues, especially when the material is used for a long time.
The comment did not involve methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethyl butylphenol on the environment.Methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethyl butylphenol is used in the maximum permissible concentration of 10% in Chinese cosmetics regulations (the nano form is not involved).
